My first video game was The Legend of Zelda on the NES. My grandpa bought it for us, and I loved it. We played all the time, and we were both terrible. When the anniversary collection was released on the Gamecube, I got to Ganon and called up Grandpa. "I'm about to beat Zelda," I told him. So he drives over, sits down on my little, twin-sized bed next to me, and I dealt the coup de grace. Credits roll. The End. He pauses and says, "That's it? I waited all these years for that?" We laughed really hard.
I've got dozens of memories like that because of gaming. I made some of my first friends in college through gaming. I met my college sweetheart through Super Smash Bros.
It helped my reading comprehension, my ability to critically think, and my hand-eye coordination.
The point is, gaming is great. I think everyone should have at least one game they love.
So when I started to see ads for "accessibility" controllers, I got curious. I looked at one that just moved the joystick to the bottom of the controller, and the only customization options were left or right-handed. The fact that it was "custom" meant that you couldn't return it. They cost $250. I was confused and disgusted, but also motivated.
I got deeper into electronics and started tinkering with different ideas for one-handed controllers. From the r/DisabledGamers subreddit, I met some great people, had them playtest, and refined my designs further. I also started to get people reaching out for custom solutions and ideas. It quickly grew into a fiery passion, and I was spending more and more time on the builds.
Today, I decided to take a leap and build this website so I could showcase the work and get these devices to those that could use them.
Accessibility should be inexpensive and intuitive. You know, accessible?
And so, the mission begins, to try and make at least one device for every type of disability to be able to play a video game, whether it's Pac-Man or Persona.
I appreciate you checking out the site!
